Having launched A Sheffield Traipsing, I want to invite you to come with me and experience the streets that birthed my book - first hand. There is nothing better than direct experience and that is what we will have together if you join me. When I was writing up my walks in Account of Twelve traipsings I found this quote.
‘Come, blind old Andrew Turner! link in mine Thy time-tried arm, and cross the town with me’– Ebenezer Elliott, ‘Steam, at Sheffield’
Ebenezer was a fiery Sheffield poet from the 1800’s, he railed against the poor laws that kept so many of his fellow citizens in poverty. The poem quoted above is his own traipsing across the city, playing Virgil to his Dante - blind Andrew Turner. He describes to his sightless companion the sights of Sheffield. He continues:
‘For there are wonders mightier far than thine;
Watt! and his million-feeding enginery!
Steam-miracles of demi-deity!
Thou can’st not see, unnumber’d chimneys o’er,
From chimneys tall the smoky cloud aspire;
But thou can’st hear the unwearied crash and roar
Of iron powers, that, urged by restless fire,
Toil ceaseless, day and night, yet never tire,’
We will make our own traipsing through a very different city to the one Andrew and Ebenezer traversed. Beginning at the Sheffield Railway Station Forecourt we will head up to Sky Edge where the views are stunning and that has been made famous by the Crucible’s staging of the musical of the same name - Standing at the Sky’s Edge - showcasing Richard Hawley, the great Sheffield songster’s music.
The walk is, (how could be anything else?), up and down, but we will take a leisurely pace and will punctuate the walk with stops for poetry and story. There will also be plenty of opportunities for refreshment in iconic settings. We will take in Park Hill Flats, Trueloves Gutter, Kelham Island, and then on up into the city centre along West Street, ending at Weston Park where we will meet up with Ebenezer once more. It will all take around four and half hours.
Kelham Island was named as one of the world's 51 coolest neighbourhoods in 2022 by Time Out. Once the beating heart of industry, Kelham Island is one of Sheffield’s oldest manufacturing sites, except nowadays these buildings house everything from indie shopping arcades to microbreweries and galleries.

on the car in the canal.
‘Aye, not so bad thanks.’
